The Ahimsa Club is a dynamic, student-led organization dedicated to empowering young people with the skills necessary to design and execute community service projects. Our dual mission focuses on serving our local community while simultaneously contributing to the well-being of our planet.
Key Features:
- Student Leadership: At the core of our club are motivated students who take the initiative in planning, organizing, and implementing service projects. This hands-on approach allows them to develop crucial leadership, project management, and teamwork skills.
- Mentorship Model: Dedicated parent volunteers serve as mentors and guides, providing support and expertise to ensure the success of student-led initiatives. This intergenerational collaboration creates a nurturing environment for youth to grow and learn.
- Skill Development: Through various projects, students acquire and hone essential skills such as project planning, resource management, public speaking, and problem-solving – all while making a tangible difference in their community.
- Community Focus: Our projects are designed to address real needs within our local area, fostering a strong sense of civic responsibility and community connection among our young members.
- Environmental Awareness: Alongside community service, we place a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship, engaging in projects that promote sustainability and ecological consciousness.
By combining student initiative with adult guidance, the Ahimsa Club creates a powerful platform for young people to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact on both their local community and the broader world.
Chinmaya Mission Seattle’s Ahimsa Club falls under CORDUSA, a secular, non-profit that aims to help communities create a sustainable program to aid in their holistic welfare.
Community Service Initiatives Include:
- Annual Food Drive: In our most recent drive, we collected and donated over 500 pounds of food to local food banks.
- Educational Outreach: We hosted representatives from the Renewal Food Bank, including the manager and outreach coordinator, who shared insights about the populations they serve. This experience was particularly inspiring for our youth members.
- Safe Parking Program Support: Purchase essential supplies like toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and towels for individuals living in their vehicles as part of the Safe Parking program at our rented church space in Kirkland.
Environmental Conservation Efforts Include:
- During Deepavali 2024, we organized a used clothing boutique with the motto “Swap Instead of Shop” to reduce environmental impact.
- Earth Corps Partnership: We volunteer with Earth Corps, an organization dedicated to maintaining local parks and protected green spaces.
- Invasive Species Removal: Our members recently participated in a three-hour Saturday morning session, focusing on removing invasive ivy from a local park.
